<p>Subsidies for renewable energy in Spain are overseen by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. Funds from the subsidies are disbursed at regional level by the respective Autonomous community, and by town halls at city level.</p>



<p>The funds cover work on residential, commercial, industrial, public administration and civic organization buildings. Individuals can be granted aid of between 30 to 40 percent while companies have a higher threshold of between 45 to 60 percent.</p>



<p>There are two ways in which subsidies are applied in Spain. These are through tax rebates or purchase and self-consumption subsidies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tax Rebates On Solar</h2>



<p><a href="https://blog.compare24.net/are-solar-panels-worth-it/" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="812" rel="noreferrer noopener">Solar installations</a> are subject to three different tax deductions. These are:</p>



<ol>
<li>The Real Estate Tax (IBI)</li>



<li>Tax on Constructions, Installations and Works (ICIO)</li>



<li>Income tax deductions (IRPF)</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Real Estate Tax (IBI)</h3>



<p>This is a reduction on your real estate tax if you own a solar or other approved renewable energy system. At present it only applies to residences. Industrial, commercial and buildings like civic organization buildings are not covered.</p>



<p>The tax rate averages between 30 to 50 percent and is set by the municipality so it differs between cities. For example, in Bilbao the tax rate is 50 percent for seven years while in Saint Sebastian it is set at 10 percent for 5 years.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tax on Constructions, Installations and Works (ICIO)</h3>



<p>This is a tax credit applied on constructions, installation and work carried out on a building where getting a planning license or permission is required. It is an indirect tax and is applied whether or not the license has been granted.</p>



<p>Similar to the IBI, the ICIO tax rate is set by the municipality. It ranges between 30 and 95 percent. For example, in Malaga the rate is 95 percent for three years while in Toledo the rate is 30 percent for three years.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Income tax deductions (IRPF)</h3>



<p>The personal income tax deduction is applied for when submitting your income statement. The maximum amount claimable is 20 percent on your income. The most important criterion for qualification are:</p>



<ol>
<li>The applicant must be the owner of the property.</li>



<li>The installation should be carried out by a certified company.</li>
</ol>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Purchase And Self-consumption Subsidies</h2>



<p>These are financial aid schemes that support the <a href="https://selectra.es/autoconsumo/info/normativa/subvenciones" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">purchase or self-consumption of solar</a>. They are applied at regional level by the respective autonomous community. The grants typically range between 30 to 50 percent. Below are some examples of how the financial aid schemes are structured in a few of the communities.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Andalusia</h3>



<p>Under the FEDER scheme, Andalusians can apply for a grant of up to 40 percent of the cost of installation.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">How Do You Qualify?</h4>



<p>To qualify for the scheme:</p>



<ol>
<li>The building or construction should have been built before 2017.</li>



<li>The applicant must be resident in Spain.</li>



<li>The property must be the applicants permanent residence.</li>



<li>Only one application per property.</li>
</ol>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Asturias</h3>



<p>Asturias offers financial aid for isolated properties that require new connections that cost over €4,000 or where the distance from the connection point exceeds 200 meters.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Balearic Islands Grants</h3>



<p>The Balearic Islands grants aid for photovoltaic self-consumption systems (energy you will use yourself) with a generative capacity of 99 kWp or less. The subsidy is capped at 50 percent for individuals, 40 percent for non-profit entities and 30 percent for companies and business organizations.</p>



<p>It pays out €1.80 per Wp for systems generating under 25 kWp and €1.50 per Wp for systems larger than 25 kWp.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Community of Madrid</h3>



<p>In Madrid, the grants are awarded for photovoltaic, thermal, wind, geothermal and mixed systems. The amount is paid out for self-consumption on a percentage basis. Photovoltaic systems are entitled to 25 percent while solar thermal systems are granted 30 percent.</p>



<p>Each of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities has its own structure for determining eligibility and how the funds are disbursed. It’s also important to note that funds are subject to availability and in some communities the cutoff date for applications has been reached.</p>



<p>At the time of writing here are communities that had either already exhausted their fund or had reached the final date for submitting applications.</p>



<ul>
<li>In Aragon the application deadline had been reached.</li>



<li>Cantabria closed for applications in November 2021.</li>



<li>Applications for grants in Castilla La Mancha closed in October 2021.</li>
</ul>



<p>Applications reopen when funds become available. It is important therefore to check with your regional body to see if they are currently taking applications. Solar is a smart investment especially if you can lock in a grant that reduces your costs.</p>

<p>Less than 5% of the world’s energy comes from solar panels. And yet the sun supplies 10,000 more times more energy than what we produce from all nuclear, gas and all our other energy sources combined.</p>



<p>Why then are we not using more solar panels? Until recently the biggest obstacle has been the expense although this has started to change as solar panel prices fall. In this deep dive we critically examine whether installing solar for your home or business is worth it.</p>



<p>Over the course of this short guide, we will cover how solar panels work, what their pros and cons are, and the overall costs involved. By the end of this guide you will have a comprehensive understanding of whether solar is right for you.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Solar Technology Explained</h2>



<p>The modern silicon solar cell was invented in 1954. Although there are older non-silicon cells that date as far back as 1883, the silicon cell was the first that could power an electrical device for several hours.</p>



<p>One of the earliest known uses of a solar cell were solar powered watches and calculators. In 1973, the first solar powered building, did not use solar panels but rather used solar roof tiles similar in design to Tesla roofs.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Types Of Solar Panels</h3>



<p>Solar panels work by converting sunlight into electricity in a process known as the photovoltaic effect. Light from the sun carries packets of energy contained in cells called photons. These photons charge the electrons in a solar cell creating the electric current that powers the appliances in a home.</p>



<p>Solar panels come in different sizes. The solar panels used to power a home or large building consist of between 60 to 72 solar cells wired together, each producing between 0.5 to 0.6 volts. Typically, we use the larger solar panels for commercial buildings.</p>



<p>There are three main types of solar panels that dominate the consumer market today. These are monocrystalline, polycrystalline and thin-film.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Monocrystalline (Mono-Si)</h4>



<p>Monocrystalline solar cells are made from a single crystal of silicon. This gives them their dark black color. Monocrystalline is the most efficient and also most expensive solar panel. Efficiency in a solar panel is a measure of how much solar energy a cell converts to electricity.</p>



<p>The average efficiency of monocrystalline is between 18 to 22 percent.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Polycrystalline (Poly-Si)</h4>



<p>Polycrystalline solar cells are also made from silicon. They are different from monocrystalline solar cells in that they are made from multiple pieces of silicon rather than one. This is why polycrystalline solar cells have a speckled blue color. Polycrystalline is slightly less efficient than monocrystalline, but is cheaper.</p>



<p>The average efficiency of polycrystalline is between 18 and 20 percent. Together, polycrystalline and monocrystalline make up 90 percent of the solar panel market.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Thin-film</h4>



<p>Thin-film is a broad category of solar cells made from a variety of materials including silicon, cadmium (CdTe) or copper (CIGS). The biggest drawback to thin-film solar cells is they have the lowest efficiency which makes them unsuited for most Northern climates. On the other hand, thin-film solar panels are typically half the price of either monocrystalline or polycrystalline.</p>



<p>The average efficiency of thin-film is between 9 and 13 percent.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Solar System Design</h3>



<p>There are two main designs used for solar systems. These are grid-tied and off-grid.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Grid-tied</h4>



<p>A grid-tied solar system is one that is connected to a major electricity grid. In this case your system is connected to the power utility. The biggest advantage to this type of system is that it allows you to sell electricity back to your utility provider as a feed-in-tariff.</p>



<p>The disadvantage to this system is it does not work if there is a blackout. As soon as the grid goes down, it shuts down. This is to prevent it from feeding electricity back into the grid which can be a hazard if there are any repairs being carried out on the grid.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Off-grid</h4>



<p>An off-grid system as you may have already guessed, is one that is not connected to the grid. In this setup your solar panels and any additional power source you have provide all your electricity needs. The biggest upside to an off-grid system is you do not have to worry about a blackout as this is a self-contained system.</p>



<p>The downside to the system is it is more expensive since it has to be sized large enough to provide all your electricity. In a grid-tied system you can switch between the grid and your solar panels.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Installation Of Solar Panels</h3>



<p>Solar panels can be installed on a roof or on the ground.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Roof-mounted</h4>



<p>The biggest advantage to roof mounted solar panels is they take up less space on your property. It is also typically cheaper and more secure.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Ground-mounted</h4>



<p>Ground-mounted solar panels are easier to maintain. They do however, take up more space on your property so they are not ideal for most installations. They also require more labor and material (mounting platforms) which makes a ground-mount more expensive.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Components of A Solar System</h3>



<p>Depending on how it is designed, a solar system requires solar panels, inverters, batteries and charge controllers. Solar panels produce the electricity for you to use. But what are the other components for?</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Inverters</h4>



<p>Solar panels produce direct current (DC). Direct current is a more efficient way to move electricity from where it is generated to where it is used because it has less voltage loss.</p>



<p>The appliances in your home use alternating current (AC), however. Inverters convert the direct current solar panels produce into alternating current appliances use. There are several types of inverter systems but the most common are grid-tied, off-grid and hybrid.</p>



<p><strong>Grid-tied inverters</strong> are used for grid-tied systems. They have an anti-islanding feature that shuts down your system when the grid goes down in a blackout.</p>



<p><strong>Off-grid inverters </strong>are used for off-grid systems. They do not connect to the grid so they do not have an anti-islanding feature.</p>



<p><strong>Hybrid inverters</strong> are used in both grid-tied and off-grid systems. They can be run even in the event of a blackout. They also allow you to sell electricity back to the grid so they combine the best features of both grid-tied and off-grid inverters.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Batteries</h4>



<p>Batteries store the energy produced by a solar panel. They are the single most expensive component of a solar energy system. Fortunately, you do not always need batteries. They only become necessary in an off-grid system or if you want to use your solar energy after dark. There are three main types of batteries used in solar systems.</p>



<p><strong>Lithium </strong>batteries are made from the same raw materials your laptop or mobile phone battery has. Lithium batteries are also used to power most of the electric vehicles on the market today. The biggest advantage to lithium for solar is that they hold more usable energy. Their biggest downside is they are the most expensive.</p>



<p><strong>Sealed lead acid (SLA)</strong> batteries are the next best alternative to lithium. While they will not give you as much energy as the same size lithium battery, they do have the advantage of being much cheaper.</p>



<p><strong>Flooded lead acid (FLA) </strong>batteries are possibly the oldest battery technology. The batteries that run conventional fossil fuel powered cars are lead acid batteries. The difference is solar lead acid batteries have a bigger capacity.</p>



<p>FLA batteries are cheaper than either SLA or lithium. The biggest disadvantage to FLA batteries is they require maintenance where lithium and SLA do not require any.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Charge controllers</h4>



<p>Charge controllers regulate the voltage and current produced by a solar panel before sending the electricity to a battery. They protect the battery from overcharging or getting drained by solar panels. Charge controllers are only necessary in a system with batteries.</p>

<p>The main reasoning behind providing aid is to encourage the deployment of renewables. Offering subsidies to consumers reduces the cost of renewables like solar and makes them more accessible.</p>

<p>This subsidy is meant to encourage solar owners to use the energy generated by their solar panel system. Through this subsidy, you are paid a bonus per year for the electricity produced from your solar panels and used by you.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.nouvelr-energie.com/pv/prime-autoconsommation" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">self-consumption premium</a> is capped at photovoltaic systems below 100kWp and for the first five years of operation. The total amount is spread over five years and each year you receive 20 percent of the total.</p>



<p>The total is worked out by multiplying the price per kWp (at the time your system was commissioned) by the size of your system.</p>

<p>If your solar panels produce more energy than you use, the excess is sold to your grid electricity supplier. This is paid out to you as tax-free income in the form of a feed-in-tariff. The rate is as follows:</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Purchase Obligation</h2>



<p>Under this subsidy, you sign a contract with a buyer (typically the EDF) to sell them your solar energy at a rate set by law. This is slightly different from the self-consumption premium where there is no contract involved and you are selling only your excess.</p>



<p>Here you can sell all your production. The contract runs for twenty years and starts once your photovoltaic system starts running. At the time of writing these are the prices you should expect:</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reduced VAT</h2>



<p>Property owners with a grid-connected photovoltaic system with a capacity of less than 3kWp can get a reduced VAT rate of 10 percent of the purchase price. This is provided the installation was carried out by an RGE certified installer. For systems greater than 3kWp the VAT rate is 20 percent.</p>



<p>Other renewables like <a href="https://blog.compare24.net/heat-pump-advantages-disadvantages/" target="_blank" data-type="URL" data-id="https://blog.compare24.net/heat-pump-advantages-disadvantages/" rel="noreferrer noopener">heat pumps</a> and thermal solar panels entitle you to a reduced VAT rate of 5.5 percent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">MaPrimeRénov&#8217;</h2>



<p>This is a new subsidy (launched in 2021) that replaces the Energy Transition Tax Credit (CITE). Funds are deposited directly into your bank account once the purchase and installation of your system is complete. This fund applies only to thermal and hybrid solar systems, however. It <em>does not</em> apply to <a href="https://blog.compare24.net/are-solar-panels-worth-it/" target="_blank" data-type="URL" data-id="https://blog.compare24.net/are-solar-panels-worth-it/" rel="noreferrer noopener">photovoltaic systems</a>.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How Do You Qualify?</h3>



<ol>
<li>The property must be at least 15 years old.</li>



<li>You must occupy the property as your primary residence for at least 8 months out of the year.</li>



<li>The installation has to be completed within two years.</li>
</ol>



<p>This fund is aimed primarily at providing cheaper heating for low income households. Funds are dispersed depending on the income bracket you fall in. The lower the income and the more people there are in the household, the higher the funds remunerated.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Eco-PTZ</h2>



<p>The zero-rate eco-loan is an interest free loan. It can range anywhere from €7,000 to €30,000. Like the MaPrimeRénov&#8217; it only covers thermal and hybrid solar systems. You have to go through a bank to access it.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How Do You Qualify?</h3>



<ol>
<li>The home must have been built before 1 January 1990 for homes on mainland France, and 1 May 2010 for those off mainland France.</li>



<li>Installation has to be by an RGE certified installer.</li>



<li>The property must be your main residence.</li>
</ol>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Local Subsidies</h2>



<p>There are also smaller subsidies given at regional or local government level. Here are a few:</p>

<li>The <strong>Burgundy-Franche-Comté</strong> region offers financial aid of up to €7,000 for low income households for thermal systems.</li>



<li>In <strong>Bouches-du-Rhône, </strong>individuals with an annual income below €30,000, and two person households with an income below €55,000 can apply for aid of up to €6,000 for renewable energy improvements on their home.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Do Solar Panel Grants Work?</h2>



<p>Generally, solar panel grants bring down the costs of solar panels. There are two main ways in which this commonly happens. The first is through a rebate or tax credit that reduces the upfront costs of solar panels and installation.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Germany Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG)</h2>



<p>The EEG as it is also called, is the main law on renewable energy in Germany. Several amendments and changes have been made to it since it was adopted, with the most recent changes coming into force in July 2022.</p>



<p>The newest changes to the law affect the solar industry more than any other. In terms of the law, Germany hopes to install 215GW of solar by 2030. Some grants and incentives like low-interest loans for solar fall under this law while some are given by agencies, federal and local government.</p>

<p>Batteries are the most expensive component of a renewable energy system. Amendments to the EEG are meant to encourage self-consumption of energy generated by renewable energy systems. Subsidizing the high cost of energy storage is one of the ways it hopes to encourage this. There are several federal state level subsidies open to consumers with energy storage systems.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bavaria</h3>



<p>Homeowners in Bavaria can claim €500 for a 3kWh solar storage unit and €100 for every additional kWh under the Energy Storage Photovoltaic Program. The maximum size of the system is capped at 30kWh which means you can claim up to €3,200.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Berlin</h3>



<p>In terms of Berlin’s Energy Storage Plus program, homeowners can claim €300 for every kWh of energy storage up to €15,000. At the time of writing, funds had already been exhausted but there is another round of funding planned for the near future.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Lower Saxony</h3>



<p>In Lower Saxony, homeowners can offset 40 percent of the cost of energy storage or a vehicle charging port. The grant can be applied to a maximum of €50,000.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tax Subsidies</h2>



<p>Aside from grants, tax subsidies can also reduce the upfront cost of a photovoltaic system. This is in the form of a <a href="https://www.solaranlagen-portal.com/photovoltaik/wirtschaftlichkeit/steuer" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">tax write off</a> for the purchase of a system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings (BEG)</h2>



<p>These are a raft of grants aimed at improving energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy technologies especially in new buildings. Launched in 2021, the program has run under the “Energy-Efficient Construction and Refurbishment” name.</p>



<p>The program encompasses improvements on:</p>



<ol>
<li>Residential buildings</li>



<li>Non-residential buildings</li>



<li>Individual measures which are improvements on a single unit rather than an entire building.</li>
</ol>



<p>Any property owner including non-German citizens can apply for the grant. In terms of the grant, property owners are entitled to between 20 to 40 percent funding for a renewable energy system. The grant also covers the purchase of an energy efficient home. Prospective property owners can receive a loan of up to €150,000 with a 25 percent repayment grant.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Feed-in-Tariff</h2>



<p>Grants are not only for the purchase of a photovoltaic system. They can also pay out for electricity produced by one. Your electricity supplier pays you for the electricity you feed into the grid.</p>



<p>The tariff at which you will be paid is locked in at the month in which your system is commissioned for 20 years. If your system is commissioned at a tariff of 6.32 cents, that is the tariff you will receive for the next 20 years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Are Solar Panel Grants?</h2>



<p>Solar panel grants are schemes, incentives or rebates offered by the government, municipality, power utility company or an independent agency. This can be in the form of a tax credit or interest free loan that reduces the upfront cost of solar panels. It could also be credits given to a solar panel owner who exports excess electricity to the grid.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Energy Company Obligation Scheme (ECO4)</h2>



<p>Launched in April 2022, the ECO4 scheme replaces the previous ECO3. Under the new ECO4 scheme, the UK government has allocated a £4 billion budget for solar panel and heat pump installations. The new scheme is valid from April 1<sup>st</sup> 2022 to 2026.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How Do You Qualify?</h3>



<p>While the scheme came into affect in July 2022, it applies to installations made from April 1<sup>st </sup>2022. Those eligible are:</p>

<li>Homeowners and tenants.</li>



<li>People on government benefits (income-related benefits, child support, housing benefit).</li>



<li>Homes with a heating efficiency rating of between D to G.</li>



<li>All electric homes.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">ECO4 LA Flex</h3>



<p>The Local Authority Flexible Eligibility or LA Flex is part of the ECO4 scheme. It’s an improvement made on the original ECO3 which was flawed in terms of how eligibility for the scheme was decided.</p>



<p>The new LA Flex allows councils and local authorities a wider leeway for determining the eligibility of a household. The new measures target the most at risk people during cold weather who cannot afford heat (households spending up to 10 percent of their income on heat).</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Smart Export Guarantee</h2>



<p>The Smart Export Guarantee pays homeowners for any excess solar energy they export to the grid. Effective since 1 January 2020, it obligates electricity suppliers with more than 150,000 customers to pay any customers who feeds electricity into the grid from a solar system.</p>



<p>The SEG allows you to choose any SEG licensee. They do not have to be your electricity supplier. You can look for one that gives you the most attractive rate per kWh as well as choose the length of your contract.</p>

<p>The Green Deal is more of a loan than a grant. It allows homeowners in England, Scotland and Wales to apply for loans covering over 40 energy-saving improvements including:</p>

<li>Micro-generation technologies like solar panels</li>

<p>The sun is a giant nuclear fusion reactor. At any given moment, up to 173,000 terawatts of energy strike the Earth from the sun. To put how much energy that is into context, the world consumes around 23,000 terawatts of energy in an <em>entire year</em>.</p>



<p>Light from the sun is energy dense. Solar cells absorb and convert this light energy into electricity that can power appliances like your laptop or mobile charger. But did you know you could also use solar for heating as well?</p>



<p>Solar heating is using solar energy to provide heat. It can also be used to cool as well. In this guide, we explore how.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Solar Heating Can Be Passive or Active</h2>



<p><strong><a href="https://sustainability.williams.edu/green-building-basics/passive-solar-design/" target="_blank" data-type="URL" data-id="https://sustainability.williams.edu/green-building-basics/passive-solar-design/" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Passive heating</a></strong> relies on structural or architectural design to capture as much natural heat from the sun as possible. The simplest way to do this is by designing a building with large windows and skylights then facing the building in the direction where it will capture the most sunlight.</p>



<p>Another simple way to capture passive heat is through the materials we use. Certain materials absorb heat more readily where others are more heat-resistant. A common way of taking advantage of passive heating is painting a hot water tank black. The dark color makes it absorb more heat.</p>



<p><strong>Active heating </strong>is the use of a mechanical device to collect and distribute solar energy as heat. This could be to provide space or water heating. The main difference between active and passive solar heating is the latter distributes heat naturally while active heating requires devices like pumps or collectors.</p>



<p>There are a number of active heating devices. Today, however, we want to focus on those commonly used for residential, commercial and industrial applications. These are solar water heating and solar space heating systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Solar Hot Water Systems</h2>



<p>Solar hot water systems collect <em>thermal energy</em> from the sun which they then use to heat water. They are different from photovoltaicsystems that collect <em>light energy</em> which is converted to produce electricity.</p>



<p>Early solar water heating systems were passive systems. They were simple systems consisting of a tank painted black to better absorb thermal energy. Today solar water heater are a little more complex. A modern solar hot water typically consists of a collector, storage tank and a working fluid.</p>



<p>The working fluid in a solar water heater can be water, antifreeze (propylene glycol) or any heat-absorbing liquid that can act as a heat exchanger. There are two main types of water heaters:</p>



<ol>
<li><strong>Evacuated Tube Collectors </strong>have a series of parallel glass tubes that absorb energy from the sun and transfer the heat to the working fluid. These are the most popular type of water heater.</li>



<li><strong>Flat Plate Collectors </strong>have a flat dark colored plate that absorbs heat and transfers it to a working fluid that circulates in tubes above the plate.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Solar Space Heating</h2>



<p>Solar space heating circulates heated air through a building. The air can be heated directly or indirectly. <strong>Direct </strong><strong>heating systems</strong> use solar collector panels that absorb thermal energy and heat air. The heated air is then circulated using an HVAC outlet. Direct air space heaters heat to about 37 degrees Celsius on a sunny day.</p>



<p>Indirect systems are more common in colder climates where temperatures can reach freezing. Similar to solar water heaters, space heating systems use a liquid heat exchanger. Thermal energy is collected and heats the liquid exchanger.</p>



<p>The exchanger then circulates through a storage tank heating the water in the tank to temperatures of up to 79 degree Celsius. The hot water or heating liquid will then circulate heat through a building in one of three ways. This could be through a radiant floor, low temperature baseboard or a central hot air system.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Radiant Floor Systems</h3>



<p>This system circulates a heated liquid through pipes embedded in the flooring. The heated liquid then radiates heat into the room. The main advantage of the system is that it is simple to implement. The biggest disadvantage to this system is that it takes longer to heat a space from a cold start than other systems.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Low Temperature Baseboards</h3>



<p>These systems require a heated liquid of between 48 and 60 degrees Celsius. Low temperature baseboards are installed at the baseboard or at a level close to the ground to allow for heat to rise and distribute through a space more naturally.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Central Forced Hot Air Systems</h3>



<p>In a central forced hot air system a heating coil acts as a liquid-to-air heat exchanger. The liquid heat exchanger heats up air as it is pulled through the ducts in a room.</p>
